Seeing impressions but no clicks in Search Console usually means your page appears too far down for anyone to reach it, or it appears high but the listing doesn’t earn the click. Which one it is depends mostly on average position. Ahrefs found that 96.98% of US desktop clicks in August 2025 went to top 10 results.
We’re writing this because it’s happening to us. In our own Search Console data for the last 28 days, queries like “hacked website repair” and “ai website audit” show dozens of impressions and zero clicks. Below we look at what that data says, how to read your own, and what actually moves a page from impressions to clicks. For the broader checklist, see why your WordPress site isn’t ranking.
Key takeaways
- Impressions but no clicks in Search Console usually means the page ranks too far down to be reached, or ranks high but the listing does not earn the click.
- Ahrefs found that 96.98% of US desktop clicks in August 2025 went to results in the top 10 positions.
- In the site’s own 28-day data, top queries such as hacked website repair had dozens of impressions, zero clicks and average positions between 58 and 89.
- If most queries rank beyond position 10, work on content, internal links and authority; if you rank in the top 10, improve the title and description.
- Search Console defines position as an average for the topmost result, so one number like 72 can hide a range from page 3 to page 9.
What Search Console counts as an impression
Google’s Performance report documentation defines the terms:
- Impressions are how many times your site appeared in Search results.
- Clicks are the number of times a user clicked through to your site from Google Search results.
- Position reflects the topmost result from your site, averaged over the scope of the view. In the table, it’s the average for the specific URL or grouping in that row.
Two things follow. An impression means you appeared, not that anyone looked at or noticed your result. And position is an average, so a single number like 72 can hide a range from page 3 to page 9.
Why impressions but no clicks happens: position
The pattern across the web is stark. Ahrefs analysed billions of Search Console clicks and impressions for August 2025 and reported the share of US clicks by ranking position:
| Position range | Share of desktop clicks | Share of mobile clicks |
|---|---|---|
| 1 to 10 (page 1) | 96.98% | 97.56% |
| 11 to 20 (page 2) | 1.77% | 1.52% |
| 21 to 30 (page 3) | 0.56% | 0.49% |
| 31 and beyond | 0.70% | 0.42% |
Source: Ahrefs, “Almost all clicks happen in the top 10 results”, published October 22, 2025. Ahrefs also noted that over the prior two years, pages outside the top 10 never contributed more than 4.37% of clicks. This is one vendor’s analysis of the sites in its data, not a universal law, but it matches what most site owners see.

Our own data: impressions but no clicks, and why
Here are our top queries in Search Console for a recent 28-day period, all with zero clicks:
| Query | Impressions | Average position |
|---|---|---|
| hacked website repair | 33 | 71.8 |
| ai website audit | 29 | 77.3 |
| website audit ai | 28 | 78.1 |
| hacked wordpress site repair | 27 | 58.7 |
| ai website audit tool | 27 | 89.2 |
| wordpress hack repair | 18 | 68.6 |
| ai website audit free | 10 | 64.2 |
Every one of these sits between positions 58 and 89, which is page 6 to page 9. At those positions, zero clicks is exactly what the Ahrefs data predicts. The listing isn’t being ignored because the title is bad. It’s simply not being seen. So for us the problem is ranking, not click-through rate, and rewriting titles alone wouldn’t fix it.
The numbers are small, too. Thirty impressions in four weeks is a very small sample, so we aren’t drawing firm conclusions about any single query. What we can say is what the position pattern implies about where the work needs to go.

How to diagnose impressions but no clicks on your site
- Open Performance in Search Console and switch on the Average position column.
- Sort by impressions and note the position of your top queries.
- Split them into three groups: positions 1 to 10, 11 to 30 and beyond 30.
- If most are beyond position 10, you have a ranking problem. Work on the page’s content, internal links and authority, not just the snippet.
- If you rank in the top 10 but get few clicks, you have a snippet problem. Improve the title, description and how the result looks.
- Check the page behind each query. Does it directly answer what the searcher wants?
- Check device and country. Positions can differ a lot between mobile and desktop and between markets.
What to do when your position is beyond page 2
- Match the query properly. Make the page’s main heading, opening paragraph and title reflect what people are searching for, in natural language.
- Add depth that others lack. Original data, sourced facts and clear answers earn rankings over time. See WordPress SEO basics for the fundamentals.
- Link to the page internally. Point related pages and articles at it with descriptive link text.
- Earn real links and mentions. Useful research, tools and guides give other sites a reason to cite you. There’s no quick way to buy this safely.
- Be patient and track it. New pages on newer sites often start deep in the results and move over weeks or months. Track average position per query, not just clicks.
- Target specific, lower-competition phrases first. Longer, more specific queries can be easier to win than broad ones.
What to do when you rank on page 1 but get few clicks
- Rewrite the title and meta description to say clearly what the page offers and for whom. Keep titles to about 60 characters so they aren’t cut off.
- Match the intent. If the query is a question, show the answer in the snippet; if it’s a service, show what you do and where.
- Check for competing features. Ads, AI Overviews and other result types can push organic listings down the page.
- Add structured data where it applies, and make sure it matches the visible page.
- Test one change at a time and wait for enough data before judging it.
How we’re using this
For our own pages, we’ve already rewritten titles and descriptions on the hacked site repair and AI Website Audit pages. Because the data says position is the real constraint, we’re putting the main effort into sourced, in-depth content around those topics, such as our guides on what to do when a site is hacked and finding and removing a backdoor. We’ll report what happens rather than promise a result. If you’d like a second pair of eyes on your own Search Console data, our SEO services start with exactly this kind of diagnosis, and the free AI Website Audit checks the technical side.
Frequently asked questions
Why do I have impressions but no clicks in Search Console?
Most often your page appears at a position too low for anyone to reach, such as page 3 or beyond. Less often it ranks high but the title and description don’t earn the click. Check your average position first to tell which one applies.
What is a good click-through rate in Search Console?
It depends heavily on position. Results at the top of page 1 get far higher click-through rates than lower ones, and published averages vary between studies. Compare a query against your own history and against pages at a similar position, not against one universal number.
Do impressions mean people saw my result?
Not necessarily. Google defines an impression as your site appearing in Search results. It doesn’t tell you whether a person scrolled to it or noticed it.
How many clicks do results beyond page 1 get?
Very few. Ahrefs reported that in August 2025, 96.98% of US desktop clicks and 97.56% of mobile clicks went to results in the top 10. Page 2 received 1.77% on desktop and 1.52% on mobile.
Will changing my title tag fix impressions but no clicks?
Only if you already rank on page 1. If your average position is beyond 30, a better title won’t get you seen. The page first needs to rank higher through better content, internal links and authority.
How long does it take to move from impressions to clicks?
There’s no fixed timeline. A newer site may take weeks or months to climb from deep results toward page 1, and some queries are too competitive to win at all. Track average position per query so you can see progress before clicks appear.
Is average position in Search Console accurate?
It’s a useful average, but an average hides variation. Google says position reflects the topmost result from your site, averaged over the view’s scope, and doesn’t explain the calculation in detail. Use it for direction rather than precision.
